Corn Snake

Pantherophis guttatus

The Corn Snake is often recommended as the single best beginner snake, and for good reason. Native to the southeastern United States, these slender, moderately sized colubrids are calm, hardy, and enthusiastic feeders. They rarely grow beyond five feet and have a gentle temperament that makes them excellent for handling — even by children supervised by an adult. Corn Snakes come in an extraordinary number of color and pattern morphs, from the classic red-orange saddle pattern on a gray base to lavenders, amels, snow morphs, and scaleless varieties. They are escape artists, though, so a secure enclosure with a tight-fitting lid is essential. With simple care requirements and a willingness to thrive in captivity, Corn Snakes have earned their place as one of the hobby's most trusted starter species.
