Uromastyx
Uromastyx spp.
Uromastyx, also known as spiny-tailed lizards or dabb lizards, are a group of stout, herbivorous lizards native to the rocky deserts and dry scrublands of North Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. Several species are popular in the pet trade, including the Ornate, Yellow Niger, and Egyptian Uromastyx, each displaying vibrant colors ranging from brilliant yellows and oranges to deep greens and blues. These diurnal lizards are basking specialists that require exceptionally high basking temperatures of 120 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit to properly digest their plant-based diet of seeds, lentils, leafy greens, and flowers. Their care differs significantly from most pet lizards in that they thrive in very low humidity, typically below 30 percent, and rarely need supplemental water when fed a proper diet of fresh greens. Uromastyx are generally shy when first acquired but become quite personable with patient, consistent interaction over time. Their unique appearance, vegetarian diet, and fascinating thermoregulatory behavior make them a distinctive and rewarding choice for intermediate keepers.
